Shopify Virtual Try-On FAQ: What Fashion Merchants Ask Before They Install
Answers to the Shopify virtual try-on questions that stall installs: photo upload, size vs look, privacy, pricing checked 7 October 2026, and how to measure it.
The email that delays a try-on install is rarely about neural nets. It is: does a shopper need to download anything, what happens to the photo, does this pick a size, and what does the trial actually include.
A Shopify virtual try-on app lets a shopper upload a photo on the product page and see your garment on that photo. Antla is a Built for Shopify apparel app: install it, add a theme block, and start from $19.99 a month after a 7-day trial (checked 7 October 2026). It does not recommend a size.
That last sentence is the one operators get wrong. Size charts answer “which label.” Try-on answers “how does this look on me.” Fashion pages that treat those as one widget spend a quarter fixing the wrong return reason.

The useful FAQ is the one that unblocks install, placement, privacy copy, and measurement, not a sloganeering dump of forty one-liners.
The stall questions are not about the model
Support inboxes for apparel try-on cluster around the same objections. Can we do this without a developer. Will it work on Dawn. What photo should we feed it. What do we tell shoppers about their selfie. How do we know it moved anything besides curiosity.
Those are operator questions. They sit next to a real commercial problem. NRF and Happy Returns projected $890 billion in U.S. retail returns for 2024, or 16.9% of annual sales. The same report found 51% of Gen Z shoppers had bought extra sizes, colors, or styles with the intent to send some of them back.
Bracketing is what happens when the product page never earns a single-size decision. A try-on widget will not fix a missing inseam. It can, on the right SKUs, close the “on me” gap that a chart cannot.
If you want the install sequence rather than the objections, use how to add virtual try-on to Shopify. This page is the pre-install FAQ: what the product is, what it is not, and what you should refuse to claim.
What the shopper actually does
The shopper flow is short on purpose.
- They land on a product page and tap Try on.
- They upload a photo they already have, or take one in the browser.
- The app generates a still of them wearing that SKU.
- They add to cart, switch a variant, or leave.
There is no shopper iOS or Android app. It runs in the storefront browser on phone and desktop. A full-body, well-lit shot usually shows more of a dress or outerwear piece. A tight selfie is enough for a top if the torso is visible. Antla has not published a minimum resolution spec, so do not invent one in your help copy.
The output is a generated photo of your garment on their photo. Color, pattern, and silhouette can look close on a clean, front-facing product image. They can miss on a back-only packshot, a video as images[0], sheer fabric, or extreme drape. That is a photography and catalog problem before it is a “the AI failed” ticket.
A preview still does not prove physical fit. Length and coverage on a body are useful. A tape measure they are not.
Look versus size: keep both on the page
Baymard’s apparel sizing research found that 83% of desktop and 87% of mobile apparel sites fail to provide sufficient sizing information. Shoppers abandon when the chart is incomplete. They also return when the chart was fine and the picture in their head was wrong.
Narvar’s apparel returns checklist is blunt on that second failure: fit and quality sit among the top return reasons, and almost half of surveyed shoppers said the purchase looked different in person than it did online.
That is two jobs.
| Question the shopper is asking | Tool that answers it | What Antla does |
|---|---|---|
| Which label should I pick? | Size chart, unit converter, or size-recommendation app | Nothing. Antla has no size chart or size recommendation of its own. |
| How will this look on me? | Photo try-on on the PDP | Renders the garment on the shopper’s photo. |
| Will it actually fit after delivery? | Neither, fully. Measurements plus honest fit notes still matter. | Does not measure the body. |
Keep your existing size app next to the selector. Put try-on where the “on me” hesitation lives, usually near Add to cart, not in the footer. The split is walked in virtual try-on vs size recommendation.
Shopify’s own virtual fitting rooms guide frames the commercial job as reducing uncertainty about fit and style before purchase. Read that as appearance confidence, not as a promise that try-on replaces a size tool. Antla’s App Store listing says the same thing in merchant language: it does not replace your size chart.
Install without a developer, then leave the rest of the stack alone
On a standard Online Store 2.0 theme, including Dawn, install is an App Store approval plus a theme-editor block. You pick which products have try-on enabled. Prefer a front-facing garment photo. If the first media item is a back view or a video, pick another image.
You do not need a developer to get a live widget on a normal product template. A developer is useful later: a custom trigger in the gallery, events into your data layer, or a custom storefront. This URL does not document a headless build.
Customization that is actually listed: color and font on the storefront, templates, product-page display. Runway and Unlimited Fashion list full customization and embed capabilities. Trend does not list that embed line. Do not assume a watermark toggle, a pose picker, or a branded-background menu. Those are not in merchant docs as of 7 October 2026.
Uninstall from Shopify Admin. Recurring App Store charges bill every 30 days in USD. To hide the widget without uninstalling, remove or hide the app block. Antla has not published a separate “pause billing” switch.
Photos, retention, and the line you can put on the PDP
Shoppers will ask what happens to the selfie. Use the live policy, not a slogan.
The privacy policy states: Images are deleted and not accessible within 72 hours.
That is the retention line. This page does not claim images are never stored. It does not claim they are unused for training. Antla is Built for Shopify. It is not SOC 2 or ISO certified.
Put a short consent line next to the upload control, and link your store privacy policy plus Antla’s. If you need a terms gate before generation, that is a merchant setting, not a reason to bury the explanation in a distant FAQ accordion.
If a try-on fails to load, check three things before you file a ticket: the product image is front-facing, the shopper photo shows a person in reasonable light, and the app block is on the product template. Then email aaron@antla.io with the product URL and a screenshot.
What $19.99 buys on 7 October 2026
Public prices below are from antla.io/pricing, opened 7 October 2026. They change. Recheck that page before you budget.
| Plan | Monthly price | Included try-ons | Then |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trend | $19.99 | 100 | $0.16 each |
| Runway | $49.99 | 500 | $0.12 each |
| Unlimited Fashion | $199.99 | 2,000 | $0.09 each |
Every plan includes a 7-day free trial. There is no free plan. Billing is monthly. No annual SKU is listed on that pricing page.
The older “35 try-ons in the trial” line is not on pricing or the App Store today, so it is not used here. Included try-ons follow the plan you pick.
Klaviyo is listed on the published plans on the pricing page. The App Store lists “Klaviyo Integration Access” on Runway and Unlimited Fashion. Email-flow context lives on Klaviyo virtual try-on. This page does not name other email or SMS tools as Antla integrations.
Antla has not published a public agency or multi-store discount schedule. Email aaron@antla.io rather than assuming a rate. It has not published a named Google Analytics or Triple Whale connector. Documented storefront events can be forwarded into your own data layer. That is not a certified connector.
App Store rating, as dated text only: 5.0 from 61 reviews on 7 October 2026. This page does not attach Review or aggregateRating markup to Antla.
How to tell if try-on is doing a job
Shopify’s conversion-rate guide is worth reading before you build a dashboard slide. Conversion is orders over visits. Tools disagree on what a visit is. Mixing denominators is how a cohort number gets presented as a store-wide win.
The number this page will quote is the one on the live conversion post. Across more than 500,000 completed Antla try-ons, shoppers who complete a preview convert at 3.8%. That is a try-on-user cohort rate, not store-wide conversion, and not a claim that every Plus store is slower. Method and limits are on Shopify virtual try-on conversion.
Treat try-on usage, completed generations, and orders from that cohort as separate rows. A high try-on count with no purchase still taught the shopper something. Sometimes that something is “not this dress,” which is useful if you pay for returns.
Shopify’s fitting-room guide cites an NRF estimate of over 19% return rate for online purchases in 2025. Appearance mismatch is one slice of that, not all of it. For the returns question with honest limits, see does virtual try-on reduce returns.
Antla has not published a built-in A/B product. If you need a holdout, duplicate the theme or roll out by collection yourself.
First-week checklist
- Pick ten SKUs with front-facing photos and a known “on me” objection: dresses, printed tops, outerwear, swim.
- Install on a duplicate theme, add the app block near Add to cart, and run the shopper flow on a phone.
- Write the privacy line next to upload, quoting the 72-hour deletion sentence and linking the policy.
- Leave the size app where it is. Do not hide the chart because try-on launched.
- Baseline before you celebrate: add-to-cart, conversion, and return reasons on those SKUs for the prior 60 days.
- Read try-on users as a cohort, not as the store-wide rate, after you have enough completions to stop guessing.
The product surface itself is virtual try-on for Shopify. Run a clothing preview at https://antla.io/demo on your own catalog before you touch the live theme.
Direct answers merchants still search
Do shoppers need to download an app?
No. Try-on runs in the storefront browser. There is no shopper app to install.
Does Antla recommend a size?
No. Antla has no size chart or size recommendation of its own. It works alongside any Shopify size app.
What happens to the customer’s photo?
Images are deleted and not accessible within 72 hours. Read the privacy policy. Antla is not SOC 2 or ISO certified.
How much does Antla cost?
As of 7 October 2026 on antla.io/pricing: Trend $19.99 a month (100 try-ons, then $0.16), Runway $49.99 (500, then $0.12), Unlimited Fashion $199.99 (2,000, then $0.09). Every plan has a 7-day free trial. There is no free plan.
Does virtual try-on increase conversion on Shopify?
Try-on users in Antla merchant data convert at 3.8% across more than 500,000 completed try-ons. That is a cohort rate among people who finished a preview, not a store-wide conversion rate.
Is a developer required?
Not on a standard Online Store 2.0 theme. Install the app, enable products with front-facing photos, add the theme block, and test on mobile.
If a question still stalls your install after this page, it is probably catalog photography or return-reason taxonomy, not another FAQ row.
Start with one hero dress, a front-facing packshot, and a phone. If the preview earns a cleaner add-to-cart on that SKU, expand. If it does not, fix the product image before you buy more try-ons.
