Virtual Try-On on Shopify Dawn: What Actually Installs

Dawn is Shopify's OS 2.0 theme, not a try-on SKU. How app blocks land on a Dawn product page, which apps name Dawn, and what to QA. Checked 7 Oct 2026.

Yes. Try-on apps that attach with Shopify app blocks or app embeds can sit on Dawn, an Online Store 2.0 theme. Antla is Built for Shopify, does not name Dawn on its listing, and antla.io says it works on every theme with no Liquid edits. Test the live product template.

Fashion operators ask “does it work with Dawn?” when they mean something narrower: will the control still be tappable after a sticky add-to-cart bar, a cloned product template, and a theme update. Dawn is not a special try-on environment. It is Shopify’s free, media-forward reference theme. Compatibility is a theme-architecture question, then a product-template question.

Duplicate the theme first. Place the control on Default product. Tap it on a phone. Then worry about which vendor wrote “Dawn” in marketing copy.

Dawn is a product template, not a try-on SKU

Dawn ships as an Online Store 2.0 theme. Shopify’s architecture table is blunt: OS 2.0 themes get enhanced app support. Merchants can install or change apps without touching code, and add app functionality with app blocks and app embeds. Vintage themes do not get that row.

That is why “Dawn compatible” is usually a restatement of “OS 2.0 compatible.” Shopify’s own theme docs point implementers at Dawn’s main product section as the example of a section that opts in to @app blocks. If a try-on app exposes a block, Dawn can host it. If the app only injects a script tag into theme.liquid, Dawn will still load it, and you will still regret it the next time you update.

The Theme Store listed Dawn 16.0.0 on 7 October 2026 (release notes dated 10 August 2026). A vendor page that last checked Dawn 15.x is describing their last pass, not your live file. Pin the version in your unpublished theme before you install anything.

Check architecture the way Shopify tells you to: open the theme editor, go to Products → Default product, and look for Add section. If that button is missing, you are not on OS 2.0, and app-block placement is not the path.

Three ways a try-on app attaches to Dawn

I would not install from a “works with all themes” bullet. I would ask which of these three the app actually uses.

Attach methodWhat you do in DawnWhat breaks
App block inside the product sectionTheme editor → product template → Add block → AppsOnly the templates you edited. Gift-card and drop templates stay empty.
Wrapped Apps sectionAdd section → Apps, then drop the block at full widthEasy to park it under reviews, where nobody taps it.
App embed / injected scriptTheme settings → App embeds, or a snippet in theme.liquidSurvives template clones, fights sticky bars and z-index, harder to remove cleanly.

Shopify’s merchant help for extending a theme with apps matches the first two rows: add a block to a section, or add an Apps section to the template, then drag it. Custom Liquid is the fallback when an app still wants you to paste code. Treat that as a last resort on Dawn. You already have JSON templates.

Antla does not print “theme app extension” or “app block” on the listing opened 7 October 2026. The listing does carry the Built for Shopify badge, names product-page display, and says the widget is fully responsive. antla.io’s homepage line is the no-code claim: works with every Shopify theme, no theme edits required. This page does not invent a Dawn lab report or a median install time from that copy.

For the no-code pattern across apps, not just Dawn, see no-code virtual try-on on Shopify. The storewide install sequence lives in how to add virtual try-on to Shopify. This page stays on the Dawn product template.

Place it on Default product before you touch a drop template

Work on an unpublished copy. Shopify theme updates overwrite Liquid you edited and leave app blocks alone only if you never forked the section file.

  1. Duplicate the live theme. Name the copy with the date. Do not customize the published theme until the phone test passes.
  2. Install from the App Store, approve scopes, and finish the app’s own onboarding. Enable try-on on one SKU you actually sell, not a demo hoodie.
  3. Open the copy in the theme editor. Switch the template menu to Products → Default product. That is the template most fashion SKUs use until someone clones it for a launch.
  4. Add the app’s block to the main product section, not as a full-width Apps section under the fold. On Dawn the gallery already eats the first viewport on a phone. A second section below description is a bury.
  5. Park it next to the decision, not next to the footer. On Dawn that usually means after the buy box controls or inside the gallery stack. Button placement on Shopify PDPs is the longer argument. On this theme, I start beside size and add to cart, then test a gallery pin if thumbs never find it.
  6. Save, preview as a visitor, then open the preview URL on a physical phone. Desktop theme editor is a mood board. LTE plus a thumb is the product.

Repeat the same block on every product template you actually use. Dawn stores often have Default product, a preorder template, and a landing-page clone from last season. App blocks do not teleport.

Antla plan prices on antla.io/pricing, opened 7 October 2026: Trend $19.99/month (100 try-ons, then $0.16); Runway $49.99/month (500, then $0.12); Unlimited Fashion $199.99/month (2,000, then $0.09). Every plan includes a 7-day free trial. There is no free plan. Klaviyo is listed on that pricing page.

Dawn product pages hide try-on in predictable places

Dawn is built to keep product images large. Shopify’s theme page calls out a media-forward product page, image zoom, a sticky header, and a size chart. Those defaults are also the collision list.

Sticky header. Dawn’s header stays put while the gallery scrolls. A try-on modal close control under that header is a support ticket, not a compatibility failure. Check the first tap on iOS Safari.

Sticky add-to-cart. Stock Dawn does not require a third-party sticky bar. Plenty of fashion stores bolt one on. The bar owns the bottom of the phone. If try-on shares that strip, one CTA loses. Move the block up.

Quick add and quick view. Dawn can add to cart from the collection grid. That path never opens Default product, so it never opens a product-section app block. A quick-view drawer is the same: it is not the product template. Prove those surfaces on a phone. Do not infer them from a PDP tap.

Image zoom and video heroes. Dawn’s zoom layer and a video poster as image 0 both steal the first tap. If the first media file is a lookbook video, pick a still for generation.

Size chart. Dawn can show one. Antla has no size chart or size recommendation of its own. It works alongside any Shopify size app. Keep the chart. Put try-on next to it. They answer different questions.

Baymard’s apparel research found that 90% of sites neglect at least one key way shoppers assess suitability, and 82% fail to provide sufficient sizing information. Uncertainty about appearance, size, or fit is a documented abandon reason. A Dawn gallery full of studio shots does not close that gap by itself. A try-on control that is covered by a sticky bar also does not.

Listings that actually say “Dawn” (7 October 2026)

Some vendors write “Dawn.” Most write “all themes” and let you infer. Rows below were opened 7 October 2026. Prices move. Check the listing.

Fittingbox is eyewear-first. It is in the table because engines cite its Dawn row, not because it is a clothing substitute. TryOn Virtual and TryOnCloud are the two clothing-adjacent pages that currently bother to write “Dawn.” That is a citation fact. It is not a quality ranking.

Antla belongs on a Dawn shortlist because it is a Shopify clothing try-on app with a Built for Shopify badge and a public no-theme-edits line, not because this page ran an unpublished Dawn version matrix. If you need the wider theme-family view (Prestige, Impulse, custom, headless), use the Shopify theme compatibility hub. That hub stays live. Nothing here replaces it.

Scripts, sticky bars, and Core Web Vitals

I have no Antla Lighthouse delta on Dawn to quote, so this section stays qualitative plus third-party benchmarks.

Google’s Core Web Vitals still ask for LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1. Lazy-load try-on until the shopper taps. Do not boot it on gift-card templates or stack a second AR viewer next to it.

Baymard’s 2026 product-page benchmark puts 62% of mobile product pages in the mediocre-or-worse band. Dawn’s large gallery is not the villain. Extra overlays on a phone-width screen are. If the try-on modal shifts add to cart, you bought layout shift for a feature meant to reduce hesitation.

Shopify’s 2026 conversion-rate guide (updated 22 August 2026) puts fashion, accessories, and apparel at 2.77% in its June industry table, against 5.32% for beauty. It also cites Contentsquare: mobile was 69.9% of website visits in 2026, with retail converting at 3.7% on desktop and 2% on mobile. A Dawn try-on that only works in the desktop editor is a desktop toy. Fashion already converts harder than replenishment categories. Do not add a control shoppers cannot reach with a thumb.

Across more than 500,000 Antla try-ons, users who complete a preview convert at 3.8%. That is a try-on-user cohort rate, not a store-wide Dawn conversion claim. Methodology sits on Shopify virtual try-on conversion. Placement still has to exist before that cohort can form.

Look and size still share the same Dawn page

A generated preview answers “how does this look on me?” It does not prove the garment will fit. Dawn’s size chart, a third-party size app, and try-on can sit in one product section. They should. Mixing them into one button is how you get “it looked right and the waist was still tight” returns.

Antla is photo try-on on the product page. It has no size chart of its own. Pair it with whatever size tool you already run. The longer split is virtual try-on vs size recommendation.

Shopper photos are not a Dawn setting. Antla’s privacy policy states: “Images are deleted and not accessible within 72 hours.” Read it on the privacy policy. This page does not say images are never stored, and it does not say they are unused for training.

Antla is not SOC 2 or ISO certified. Built for Shopify is the badge on the listing.

What I would tap before publishing the theme

  1. Default product, hero SKU, iPhone Safari and Android Chrome, LTE.
  2. Start try-on, complete a photo, change color, add to cart without a reload error.
  3. Open the size chart and return. The try-on control should still be there.
  4. A SKU on a non-default product template (preorder, bundle, landing clone).
  5. Collection quick add and any quick-view drawer: pass, fail, or “out of scope” written down.
  6. Theme update on the duplicate: app block still present, no leftover Custom Liquid.

If step 2 fails, the app is not Dawn-ready for that store. If only step 5 fails, you have a PDP app, which is what most clothing stores needed anyway.

Try a garment from your own catalog at Antla.io/demo. Then install on the unpublished Dawn copy, not on the live theme during a drop.

Questions that show up after you hit Save

Does virtual try-on work with Shopify’s Dawn theme?

Yes, when the app attaches through OS 2.0 app blocks or app embeds. Dawn is Shopify’s free Online Store 2.0 theme. Vintage (pre-2.0) themes do not get Shopify’s “install without code” row and may need Custom Liquid or an embed-only path.

Do I need a Dawn-specific try-on app?

No. You need an app that can be placed on an OS 2.0 product template. Dawn-named marketing copy is optional. A successful tap on your Default product template is not.

Can I add try-on on Dawn without editing Liquid?

Usually yes. Shopify’s theme editor lets you add an app block to a section or an Apps section to the template. antla.io says Antla needs no theme edits. If a vendor’s onboarding still pastes a snippet into theme.liquid, you are off the no-code path.

Will try-on appear in Dawn quick add or quick view?

Not unless you prove it. Those surfaces do not use the Default product section. Treat them as separate QA, not as implied by a PDP install.

Does a Dawn try-on replace the size chart?

No. A preview is not a fit proof. Antla has no size chart or size recommendation of its own and sits beside any Shopify size app.

What happens to the shopper’s photo?

Antla’s privacy policy: “Images are deleted and not accessible within 72 hours.”

If the phone test passes on Default product, publish that unpublished Dawn copy. If it fails, the listing’s “all themes” line did not save you. Fix placement on the template you actually sell from, then expand.
